How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
