How To

Basil growing tips

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil can be used to flavor dishes and add flavor to sauces, soups, pasta, and desserts. Here are some tips for growing basil indoors at home.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. You should sow the seeds at a depth of 1/2 inch in small pots. The pots should be covered with clear plastic wrap. Germination can take up to ten days. After the pots have germinated, place them in a sunny area where temperatures are around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Remove the plastic wrap and transplant the seedlings into larger containers. Add potting mix to each container. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. After the danger of frost has passed, apply a thick layer of mulch over the top of the plants. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. Pick the leaves regularly to encourage bushier, healthier growth.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
