How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
