FAQ

When should you plant herbs?

Herbs should be planted during springtime when soil temperatures reach 55degF. The best results are achieved when they are in full sunshine. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. When the plants have started to grow, transfer them into bright indirect sunlight. After three to four weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Keep them hydrated.

How much light does a tree need?

It all depends on what kind of plant you have. Some plants need 12 hours direct sunlight each day. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Most vegetables require 10 hours direct sunlight in a 24-hour period.

What is a planting plan?

A planting calendar is a list of plants that should be planted at different times throughout the year. The goal of the planting calendar is to increase plant growth while minimizing stress. Early spring crops like spinach, lettuce, and peas must be sow after the last frost date. Summer beans, squash, cucumbers and squash are all later spring crops. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

What should you do first when you start a garden?

First, prepare the soil before you start a garden. This includes adding organic matter such as composted manure, grass clippings, leaves, straw, etc., which helps provide plant nutrients. Next, place seeds or seedlings in prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

Do I need to buy special equipment to grow vegetables?

No, not really. All you need are a trowel or shovel and a watering can.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

You can tell by looking at the color of the dirt. You will find more organic matter in darker soils that those of lighter colors. Soil testing is another option. These tests assess the soil's nutritional content.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
