FAQ

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

By looking at the dirt's color, you can tell. The soil color will tell you if it contains more organic matter than the lighter ones. A second option is soil testing. These tests assess the soil's nutritional content.

What is the purpose of a planting calendar?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. Early spring crops like spinach, lettuce, and peas must be sow after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. Your pot should have drainage holes to ensure that the tree doesn't get rotted by excess moisture. The pot should be deep enough to hold the rootball. This will stop the tree becoming stressed.

What length of time can I keep an indoor flower alive?

Indoor plants can survive up to ten years. To promote new growth, it is essential to repot your indoor plants every few month. Repotting is easy; simply remove the old soil and add fresh compost.

How big is a vegetable gardening space?

The rule of thumb is to use 1/2 pound seed per square foot. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

It's possible to wonder if you will have enough space for a vegetable or fruit garden if your current one is not available. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. You just need to plan. You could make raised beds that are only 6 inches tall. Or, you could use containers instead of raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
