FAQ

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

If you don't already have a vegetable garden, you might wonder whether you'll have enough room for one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It's all about planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. Either way, you'll still get plenty of produce.

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

One square foot of soil will require 1/2 pound of seeds. This is a good rule of thumb. If you have a 10-foot by 10-foot area (3m by 3m), then 100 pounds will be needed.

When is the best month to plant a vegetable garden in my area?

From April to June is the best season for vegetables. This is when the soil temperature is highest and plants grow most quickly. If you live somewhere cold, it is best to wait until July or august.

When should you plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. To grow basil indoors, place seedlings in pots filled with potting mix and keep them out of direct sunlight until they sprout leaves. When the plants have started to grow, transfer them into bright indirect sunlight. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

Are pots possible to grow fruit trees?

Yes! Yes! To prevent tree rot, make sure the pot has drainage holes. Also ensure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the root ball. This will prevent the tree from being stressed.

What is the purpose of a planting calendar?

A planting calendar is a list that lists plants that should be planted at specific times throughout the year. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. Early spring crops like spinach, lettuce, and peas must be sow after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
