How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
