FAQ

What is the best vegetable garden layout?

The best vegetable garden layout depends on where you live. You should plant vegetables together if you live in a city. You should plant your vegetables in groups if you live outside of the city. This will ensure maximum yield.

Can I grow vegetables in my backyard?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer to that question is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. You could make raised beds that are only 6 inches tall. You can also use containers as raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It all depends on what kind of plant you have. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunlight per day. Others prefer 8 hours in indirect sunlight. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

What is a planting plan?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and potatoes.

What month should I start a vegetable garden?

The best time to plant vegetables are from April through June. This is when soil is at its warmest and plants are growing the fastest. If you live somewhere cold, it is best to wait until July or august.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some ways to grow basil indoors.

  1. It is important to choose the right location. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination usually takes about 10 days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Add potting mix to each container. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. After the dangers of frost have passed, mulch the plants. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. A timer can be used to shut off the irrigation system when it is dry.
  6. Make sure to pick basil right when it is at its peak. You can encourage bushier growth by picking the leaves more often.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
