You might be wondering what indoor gardening is. Well, it's basically growing plants inside your house. It could include herbs and succulents as well as plants, trees, flowers and other plants. Here's how you can get started. This course will teach you about soil, lighting, plants and how to grow them indoors. If you have the time and patience to learn how to grow plants indoors in just a few minutes, you will be able to do so in no more than a couple of hours. You may find that it is easier to grow indoor plants than you realized.

Indoor gardening allows you to grow plants

An indoor garden can house many different plants. While vegetables, such as lettuce and tomatoes, take longer to grow, you can still grow them. Indoor gardening is slower than outdoor gardening. Get your plants 14 to 20 hours light each day to encourage growth. To increase the humidity in the air, you can also use grow lamps or a cool mist humidifier.

Root crops are another option for an indoor garden. These plants can be grown in containers that contain soil, but they will require supplemental lighting. They require good light to develop their flavor and color. Some plants can grow indoors, even though they only have limited sunlight. Choose plants that grow in shallow soil in a pot or container. Over-fertilizing them can result in spindly roots, and lush green leaves. Chantenay and other shorter varieties are better.

The right soil to use for your indoor garden

When you are choosing the soil for your indoor plants, there are several things to keep in mind. First, make sure you select soil that can absorb water. If you mix garden soil with indoor soil, the result could be a very wet mixture that can damage your plants. The soil that is heavier than the recommended weight will not help your plants develop a healthy root system. A soil should have a balanced pH and contain regular nutrients.

The soil should be suitable for indoor gardening. Topsoil, for instance, contains seeds, bugs, and pathogens that may harm your plants. Coconut coir makes indoor gardening easier because it is lightweight, retains water and releases it quickly. For optimal drainage, mix peat moss with perlite if you are planning to grow succulents.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. It's great for flavoring dishes, adding flavor to soups, sauces, salads, pasta, and even desserts. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Be careful about where you place it. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. Basil is tolerant to partial shade, but it prefers full sun. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination takes approximately ten days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Transplant the seedlings once they're big enough to handle. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Fill each container with potting mix and add some gravel or pebbles to help drain excess moisture. Add more potting mixes as necessary. The containers should be placed in a sunny location or under indirect lighting. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Water the plants regularly. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. You can also use a timer for the irrigation system to be turned off during dry spells.
  6. You should pick your basil at its peak. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can then be dried on paper towels, screens, or other suitable surfaces. Dry the leaves in glass jars and bags in the fridge.
